Studio speakers from tiny to massive can be argued about in here.

Monitor station

Hey guys,

Most of you know the size and needs of my small studio. Can you recommend some sort of monitoring station? I've reviewed the Big Knob, the Presonus monitor station, and the Presonus Central station. I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this. Is there other options?

We had an SPL monitoring do-hicky for a while and I thought it was pretty sweet. Made by Germans...you know they make great stuff.

The Mackie Big Knob is in one of the rooms at Nimbus, seems to work great.
But, if I had the cash. I'd go for the SPL monitor controller.

Is this the one you guys are thinking?

That's a hell of a lot more expensive than the Presonus. $1K vs.$345 ??
I've heard bad things about the Big Knob. Weird noises and such.

Yeah that's the one we used to have.
Big price difference, but big difference I guess.
I haven't used the Big Knob enough to experience these weird issues, but honestly they don't seem out of the question.
The SPL one just works like you want/need it to.

The big knob us just a mackie board, i wouldn't bother/risk the colouration of mackie opamp pathways etc etc....

the presonus is nice because it is all passive i've heard, so no colouration.....it's simple, and it's meter is useless but pretty, but screw the meter anyway......

the spl is expensive because the vol knob is stepped and each side (L+R) are perfectly matched in level at every step..... i think the internal audio pathway runs at 120volts so that the interference is kept to a minimum and all that jazz, and the opamps/pathways are all awesome etc etc...... some custom mastering consoles are 120volt internal, if that means anything....
